Over the last month, our team has been focused on community! Gathering feedback from current IPFS analytics/malware analyzer users has helped us to push updates improving the end-user experience.

🌲Orbiting ETH Denver 2024

In collaboration with the Filecoin Foundation, Leto, and Filecoin Orbit Austin, our team hosted an ecosystem showcase during the chaos of ETH Denver! The event saw over 150 attendees with speakers from 10 teams. Filecoin Orbit ambassadors from 4 continents were represented!

Leto co-founder, Logan presented at the showcase focusing on "why privacy preserving tooling is needed to protect open P2P networks". He highlighted issues faced by the traditional web with regards to malicious content and how these issues have spilled over to the open web.

The Filecoin Orbit Community is a group of volunteer Ambassadors who host Filecoin meetups and hackathons, publish educational materials about Filecoin, and build software using Filecoin, IPFS, or FVM.

👫 Community!

Over 10,000 builders, users, and investors converged at ETH Denver 2024 for a week of collaboration. The open web and decentralized physical infrastructure networks took center stage alongside many other important innovations. Our team greatly enjoyed connecting with Open Web builders and companies looking to adapt their tech stack!

Leto co-founder, Alex presented the Leto platform and roadmap at the Filecoin ETH Denver booth! This talk highlighted the Leto Malware Analyzer and how the toolset was scaled up for enterprise level throughput.

Early in the week, our team attended the Workable Web3 Summit. We presented the Leto platform and our roadmap. Thanks to the Workable team for an awesome event!

The past few weeks at Leto have been focused on improving the Leto platform and scaling our Malware Analyzer.

We are co-hosting a Filecoin ecosystem showcase event at ETH Denver 2024 with the Filecoin Foundation! Learn more and register here.

🖥️ Malware analyzer available at Leto

The Leto Malware analyzer now accepts log files and csv files to enable large scale file scanning. This proves a path to faster and more efficient means of scanning ecosystem partner data for harmful malware within their systems. Login at Leto.gg and upgrade to a Business plan for access. Input an IPFS CID or a log file/csv file and Leto will return a risk score for each file. A file with a score of 10 is the most likely to be malware or another type of malicious content. For users who input a log file or csv file, you will receive an email report with your files and their scores.

We are prioritizing the automation of harmful content being removed/redacted from public sites while also adding to the IPFS BadBits registry with our findings and supporting evidence. The team is excited to scale and help our friends run safer systems while making it simple and easy for them.

We are currently undergoing a refresh of the Leto Dashboard. The relentless Yasir Nadeem has pushed an amazing through-built User Interface. Leto "Pro" and "Business" services are available under "Account Details".

The Leto website was refreshed with updated info about the Malware Analyzer! There is an added pricing section to better display our products.

💡Filecoin Orbit event at ETH Denver!

The Leto team is super excited to co-host the Filecoin Orbit Ecosystem Showcase and Happy Hour with the Filecoin Foundation at ETH Denver 2024. This will be a side event for the community to come together in a more intimate setting to share ideas, demo products, and grow together. Register for the event a filecoindenver.io!

The first 100 audience members who arrive at the venue will receive a limited edition Filecoin Plush Skiing Corgi, which was named the "best merch at World Economic Forum Davos 2024" by Axios. Ecosystem companies will present lightning talks and demos with a happy hour to end the day!

Over the last few weeks, the team has focused on optimizations to the malware analyzer for larger scale users, as well as a lot of backend planning for 2024.

As more users leverage the malware analyzer, we are streamlining the user experience to make the process as convenient as possible. This involves accepting many file types and many different forms of data ingestion. We started with IPFS data and will soon include support for web links, csv files , and more!

Detecting malicious content on networks like IPFS is difficult and time consuming. Malware, phishing webpages, and other types of malicious content are harmful to the ecosystem!

We created the Large Field Analyzer to help developers automatically detect malware on IPFS content.

Create an account and get started at letoanalyzer.com.

• Login and submit an IPFS CID(s).

• The files are download to our malware analyzer Sandbox.

• In the user's account, each CID is given a score from 0-10. Any score over 5/10 is potentially malicious.

DISCLAIMER: This software is still a work in progress! The accuracy and information given from our analyzer will improve as our analyzer software codebase grows.

📊 Collect analytics on a dedicated IPFS gateway

Leto supports many common IPFS gateways including Web3.storage, Pinata, Spheron, and more! If you use a dedicated IPFS gateway from one of these providers, you can use Leto to collect analytics on this gateway. Read the docs.

Login at Leto.gg and select "Proxy gateway".

• Input your dedicated IPFS gateway link and choose your provider

  

• Leto creates a new gateway that resolves requests to your dedicated gateway.

• This new gateway also collects anonymous analytics!

• A new gateway link is provided. Use this link to serve IPFS content for your app or platform.

💬 Spam tracking

Anonymous IPFS traffic collected by Leto can be used to identify spam on IPFS content. We are experimenting with a notification system to alert a developer to suspicious traffic spikes on their platform. More on this soon!

Our Filecoin Orbit Austin group hosted Lindsay Walker from the Starling Lab for an awesome workshop! She walked us through the Capture, Store, and Verify Framework. We learned about case studies, and tools used to verify data for journalism, law, and history!

The Leto team attended the Filecoin Las Vegas conference and the Piknik Enterprise Storage Provider Accelerator (ESPA) Program this month. Connecting with ecosystem storage providers/operators was crucial for better understanding how to onboard more data and enhance its protection and management within the network.

🚅 Gateway Racing

To use Leto, simply serve content to end users with the Leto IPFS gateway. The gateway will collect analytics on your webpage or other IPFS content.

To provide resilience and high performance, the Leto gateway redirects requests to the w3link, dweb.link, and ipfs.io gateways. This is called gateway racing. IPFS data is cryptographically verified, so Leto can ask many different IPFS gateways for the same content.

View the analytics in the Leto dashboard or with the Leto Analytics API. The data is anonymized and aggregated by IPFS CID to ensure end-user privacy.

⚒️ Bring your IPFS gateway!

In many cases, developers use a dedicated gateway from a hosting provider to serve IPFS content. Leto makes it easy to bring your gateway with you to collect analytics!

With the Leto, devs can login and input a gateway link from another provider (Lighthouse.storage, Spheron, Filebase, Pinata, and more). Leto will provide a link for a new gateway built on top of your original gateway. Use this Leto IPFS gateway to serve content to end users.

🎭 Identifying malware on IPFS

Platforms and developers in the IPFS world struggle with malicious users hosting malware on their systems. To solve this problem, our lead developer, Logan made a tool to automate the identification of malware on IPFS content.

Input a list of IPFS CIDs into the Large Field Data Analyzer and receive a malware status report. Find the project here on Github! This tool was inspired by the IPFS object analyzer.

In the rapidly evolving world of the web, it's crucial to learn from the missteps of the past. With IPFS and Filecoin, we have a chance to rebuild the web to benefit humanity. As we push the development of analytics for the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), it is important to avoid recreating the same problems that exist with current analytics systems.

The future of analytics does not need to come at the expense of user privacy. As the world continues to wake up to the problems of conventional analytics, a paradigm shift is on the way.

Developers in the IPFS ecosystem are aware of the limitations and risks associated with conventional web infrastructures. Hence, reverting to traditional analytics tools isn't always their preferred choice. Enter Leto: we offer an insight-driven approach, providing information about content on IPFS without compromising user privacy.

Although when using the service, your IPFS analytics are stored on our cloud server, all analytics data generated by the system is anonymized, aggregated, and open to the public.

At Leto, our solutions are anchored in a clear set of values:

1) Transparency

The mechanisms used in Leto Analytics must be clearly communicated. Read more about how Leto works in our docs here. Additionally, every line of Leto's production code is open source on the Leto Github, inviting peer reviews and fostering trust.

2) User Control

Our analytics dataset is publicly accessible, allowing developers and end users to easily download their data anytime through our dedicated Analytics API. End users can access their analytics allowing devs to be fully transparent with the analytics they are collecting.

To avoid becoming a gatekeeper of this system, the Leto gateway and Analytics API are free to use (with rate limits). Leto provides a paid version of the system with dedicated gateways and additional tooling for teams looking to use Leto at scale.

3) Anonymization

All analytics data collected and made accessible via the Analytics API is anonymous. This allows us to provide an open data set while maintaining user privacy.

Adhering to a minimalist ethos, we ensure data collection remains streamlined, capturing only what's absolutely essential and making sure the data is easy to understand.

4) Accountability

Leto is an open source, community-driven tool set. At the heart of our mission, we are committed to an open dialogue about our processes. It's crucial that we clarify the nature of the data collected and the manner in which that data is used.

Frequent intervention and optimizations are essential. Leto could not have made it this far without the community. We believe the internet should not be controlled by the individuals who run it, but by the people who use it.

📖 Simplifying the developer experience

We took time to ensure our developer documentation makes it easy to get started. To use Leto, switch out the IPFS gateway used in your project for the Leto IPFS gateway. Once data is retrieved through the Leto IPFS gateway, anonymous analytics information is automatically added to our open database.

The Leto gateway address is:

Then when you are ready to query the analytics data you can use the example code below to query the Leto analytics API. Replace “cid” with as many IPFS CIDs as you would like.

🧰 Benchmarking IPFS Gateways

Work continues on the IPFS object analyzer. This is a really useful tool to benchmark the performance of different IPFS gateways when retrieving a specific CID(s). Although this is a work in progress, the tool is already giving us insight into improving IPFS retrieval performance by racing IPFS gateways. A lot more to come on this topic!

We are super excited to partner with Veritic.com as an IPFS analytics provider for their smart contract management system. Leto and Veritic are complementary tools that developers use to build awesome We3 projects.

Seeing IPFS and Filecoin’s growth over the past few years has been incredible! The idea of making the world's internet more interplanetary is becoming more of a reality every day. After running apps in the IPFS/Filecoin ecosystem and hearing how other developers implement analytics into their apps, we learned a lot of developers wanted an analytics alternative that was privacy-focused. We crazily decided to work on the problem ourselves.

Luckily, by attending IPFS Camp 2022 in Lisbon, we were able to sort out the easiest and safest ways to go about getting our analytics data. Since most apps and developers are using the IPFS Gateways to get data to users, it is feasible for developers to switch their gateway to us. They can get the analytics needed to determine what parts of their NFT collection are more desirable or how many people have viewed their website hosted on IPFS.

We are full steam ahead towards a decentralized version of our analytics api and will have a blog post about it in the near future! (Hold us to it!). All of our code and software is all open source on Github here.

🖥️ Improving the Dashboard and User Portal

Great week here at Leto starting with the master, Yasir Nadeem continued adding features to our Dashboard here! We built the Dashboard service to help create more value from your anonymous IPFS analytics data.

Soon you will be able to save your searched CIDs in your own user portal! The ability to easily see how many times your content has been served (via a Gateway) is easier than ever.

We are super excited to build out the Dashboard service based on community feedback. The team loves hearing from you, so please continue to share your ideas. More awesome features are coming soon!
